Exrpts from Mail Stream: A Report on Incoming Direct Mail
By ParadyszMatera and Direct Newsline
Ogden Publications' Utne Reader recently rolled out with a new improved version of their long standing control package. Sage Communications has made several improvements and updates to the 20 year old Bill Jayme package. The new package offers the digest of independent and alternative media to potential subscribers. The front of the #11 envelope now asks "What would you pay to be as freethinking and optimistic as you were 20 years ago?" Beneath the teaser, three involvement stickers were added reading, $1000? , $100?, or Just $10? Below the stickers, text directs recipients to "remove one sticker & place on card inside."
Recipients are also directed to "See inside for your Free Gift!"
Within the package, a double-sided letter from the editor promotes the original editorial features as well as news content, culled from "the best independent news and inside reports." The new freemium mentioned on the package front is a bookmark, which Sage Communications created and features a cartoon image of a person beneath a large stack of papers and copy further emphasizing the broad range of reporting: "We bookmark the best of over 1,500 publications ... so you don't have to." Images of past covers as well as sample article listings are featured in a foldout brochure. A new lift note from co-founder Nina Utne discusses the magazine's 20-year "track record for being far out in front of the mainstream." A faux sticker image highlighting the hard offer of $10 for six bimonthly issues appears on the back of the brochure as well as the top of the letter from the editor. The reply form, labeled as a "zero-risk reservation card," reiterates the offer and includes space for the "Just $10" involvement sticker from the outer package.
