Founding Sages


Josef originally founded the agency as Sage Associates in 1978 to provide advertising and creative services to natural food companies, environmental organizations and other nonprofits. This led to his publishing the Whole Life Times, which eventually became Body & Soul magazine. Josef reopened as Sage Communications in 1998 to provide winning creative and direct marketing for non-profit organizations, financial services companies and publishers. He is a leading expert on magazine and membership retention, and is credited as a pioneer of the “Voucher Hybrid” format used extensively in subscription acquisition and donor retention.
Anne co-founded the agency in 1998. She has over 30 years of experience in direct marketing, and her responsibilities have included various executive positions including publisher, marketing director, expo planner and creative consultant. She manages business development and client relations and keeps everything at Sage running smoothly. Anne has spoken at many conferences, including the NY DMA Non-Profit Conference, DM Days, CRMA, Canadian Circulation Conference, PMA Conference in London, Circ Day LA, Folio, Circulation Expo and Bridge Conferences.
